The use of chemicals to disinfect and clean water sources in daily life or industrial production is indispensable. But in the market, there are a variety of different chemicals that can be used for water treatment. Among them, chlorine powder and chlorine pellets are the most commonly used, so many customers are interested and want to learn more.

What are Chlorine pellets?

Chlorine pellets, also known as TCCA 90 chemicals, are a product produced in pellet form with 3 weight levels: 2g, 20g and 200g. In particular, active chlorine content accounts for up to 90% with the main effect of killing bacteria, cholera, fungi, algae, deodorizing or cleaning water in swimming pools, domestic and industrial wastewater effectively.

In addition to being used in water treatment of swimming pools, chlorine pellets are also used in many other industries. For example, using chlorine to treat aquaculture water, domestic water, wastewater or sterilize in healthcare, etc. Chlorine pellets are known as antibacterial disinfectants. It is extremely good, highly effective and popular in many parts of the world.

Powdered chlorine or Ca(OCl)2 has the same effect as the chemical TCCA 90 but has a difference that comes from its name. Accordingly, this is a chemical used in the process of treating swimming pool water in powder form with an active chlorine content of up to 70% and is being prioritized by many swimming pool owners.

For powdered chlorine products, it will not or has little ability of killing algae in water, so its main use is still disinfection. In addition, in addition to disinfecting swimming pool water, the product is also used in treating wastewater of hotels, hospitals, export processing zones, restaurants, water treatment areas,...

Distinguish between chlorine powder and chlorine pellets

In fact, the differences between these two chemicals are expressed in many different aspects. Specifically:

Active chlorine content

Not all customers can clearly recognize the active chlorine content in each product. Accordingly, in chlorine pellets, the active chlorine content fluctuates from 85 - 91%, while chlorine powder only fluctuates at 60 - 68%.

Ingredients of the product

TCCA chemicals for swimming pool water treatment have organic ingredients with small round pellet shapes produced in 3 weight levels: 2gr, 20gr and 20gr. On the other hand, chlorine powder has inorganic main ingredients in powder form and is not pre-dosed.

Dosage for use

Chlorine pellet products are highly appreciated for their quality as they do not cause sediment that can stick to the walls or bottom of the swimming pool and quickly kill moss and algae. The product is often used with a chemical filling device in the form of large pellets weighing 200 grams.

Chlorine powder is calcium-based so it can cause residue that sticks to the bottom and walls of the pool. Furthermore, its ability of destroying moss and algae is also extremely poor, almost impossible to destroy completely. Therefore, people still often use chlorine powder together with algae-killing materials and prepare it before putting it in the swimming pool.

Effective disinfection

Chlorine tablets only need to be used in a small dose to treat water in the swimming pool area. Their activity lasts for a long time, so they are highly effective and save cost. On the contrary, because chlorine powder has a rapid evaporation activity, customers need to use a fairly high dosage to achieve the desired results.

Influence of water pH

TCCA chemicals are organic and do not affect the pH of water or cause precipitation. As for chlorine powder, it is based on alkaline calcium so it will increase the pH of the water in the swimming pool and need to use additional conditioners to neutralize it.

Safety

Regarding safety for humans and the environment, chlorine pellets, if used in sufficient doses, will be effective in treating water without any effects. Chlorine powder is less effective, so it needs to be used frequently or with more weight, causing greasy skin, dark skin or some eye diseases, affecting the lungs and digestive system.

Although chlorine has good antibacterial properties, because of its characteristic odor, it can cause some discomfort for users. Especially when the concentration of chlorine in water is high, it can cause skin irritation, rash, eye pain, itching,... even difficulty in breathing. Therefore, treating swimming pool water with chlorine powder needs to follow certain safety standards and ratios.

First, customers need to check the water concentration and prepare certain tools such as a scale, a basin or bucket of about 20 liters that can withstand chlorine corrosion, a water stirring stick and a ladle. Then add a certain amount of powder depending on the volume of the swimming pool and a little water into the pot/bucket prepared to dissolve and wait until the sediment settles, then use a ladle to scoop water and spread it into the pool.

In addition, people can use a pump combined with a hand-held stick to stir water with chemicals. However, please pay attention to buying chlorine powder or water treatment chemicals from a reputable unit, and avoid buying fake or poor-quality products. In addition, you must also pay attention to usage, expiration date and storage, and avoid inhaling chlorine gas when opening the product packaging to ensure safety.
