What is PAC-DA 31% chemical?
Before discussing the application, usage, and preservation of PAC-DA 31%, we will learn about the properties of this chemical specifically as follows.
Physical properties of PAC 31%
The PAC-DA 31%, or Poly Aluminum Chloride 31% powder chemical is a type of fine yellow powder and is highly hygroscopic. When stored in powder form under normal conditions, the chemical can last longer. This chemical dissolves easily in water, resulting in a clear solution.
- Appearance: Fine, yellowish powder
- Molecular weight: 20000 – 30000
- Content of Al2O3 : ≥ 31%
- Density: ≥ 0,7 g/ml
- pH 1% solution in water: 3.5 – 5%
- Water insoluble: ≤ 0.3%
Chemical properties of PAC 31%
Upon dissociation and hydrolysis of PAC in water, the resulting particles include Al3+ ions, molecular Al(OH), solid Al(OH)3, Al(OH)2+, Al2(OH)24+, Al3(OH)45+, Al(OH)4-, Al13O4(OH)247+. In particular, Al13O4(OH)247+ polymer particles, known as Al13, that are particles create the phenomenon of flocculation and coagulation.
When PAC is to water, producing an Al13 particle with a charge of 7+. These particles neutralize the charge of colloidal particles, causing flocculation. Particularly, the hydrolysis rate of Al13 is slower than Al3+, therefore it will persist for a longer time. Not only that, the size of the Al3+ particles in the PAC chemical is also much smaller compared to the polymer particles created. Therefore, the floc will have a larger size, helping to better settling ability.
In addition, the pH range of PAC is twice as high as aluminum sulfate, making the coagulation of impurities easier and more effective. Consequently, the water treatment performance of PAC is also better.

Applications of PAC-DA 31%
Chemical Poly Aluminum Chloride (PAC) is a coagulant widely used in the process of water treatment for water supply every day. The process of flocculating hydroxide flocs helps to reduce the pH in water and precipitate suspended impurities, making the water clearer and cleaner.
PAC 31% is used to treat wastewater containing suspended sediment in industrial wastewater from ceramic, paper making, dyeing industries, food processing, etc. By participating in the impurity separation process from wastewater, the PAC chemical helps treated wastewater reduce pollution before discharge into the environment.
PAC is also used to treat swimming pool water or aquaculture (shrimp ponds, fish ponds, etc.). Additionally, PAC is used for treating drinking water supplies and industrial water supplies, such as surface water treatment.
Precautions for the use of PAC-DA 31% chemical
PAC is a highly effective coagulant chemical, even at low doses, so it should only be used in moderate amounts. If used too much, the colloidal particles may dissolve.
- The dosage uses PAC 31% for 1m3 of river, pond, and lake water:
- For water under turbidity from 90 NTU: 6–10g/m3 PAC
- For water with higher turbidity from 90 NTU: 10–30g/m3 PAC
(The dosage of PAC can change depending on factors such as turbidity, organic content, pH, etc.)
- The dosage of wastewater treatment (for making paper, textiles, dyeing, and food processing) is from 20-200g/m3, depending on the suspended solids content and the characteristics of the wastewater.
To determine the exact dosage of PAC needed, it is advisable to use the Jar test method.
Instructions on how to store and handle incidents with PAC-DA 31%
Due to its high hygroscopicity, PAC 31% chemicals should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from combustible substances. The optimal storage temperature for the chemical should range from 5-35℃.
When an incident occurs with PAC chemicals, you should handle it as follows:
- If PAC splashes onto the skin: Immediately remove contaminated clothing, then rinse the affected area with water for approximately 15-20 minutes.
- If PAC splashes into the eyes: Promptly rinse the eyes thoroughly with clean water for 20 minutes and then go to the nearest medical facility for examination and treatment.
- If inhaling PAC powder: Move the victim to an area with fresh air and administer artificial respiration if necessary.
- If swallowing PAC: Encourage the individual to drink plenty of water. If the victim becomes unconscious, do not give them anything to drink and promptly take them to the nearest medical facility.
